Visitor Record Extension
Extend your stay in Canada as a visitor beyond the initially authorized period.
Visitor Record Extensions – Stay Longer in Canada

When you come to Canada on a visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), you are usually allowed to stay for up to 6 months per entry. If you want to remain longer, you must apply for a Visitor Record extension before your current status expires. At Sober Immigration, we help individuals and families apply for Visitor Record Extensions, ensuring they stay in Canada legally and avoid overstaying.

Visitor Record Extensions – Stay Longer in Canada

What is a Visitor Record?

A Visitor Record is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that:

  1. Extends your authorized stay as a visitor in Canada.
  2. Includes a new expiry date by which you must leave or apply again.
  3. Is not a visa and does not allow you to re-enter Canada if you leave.

When to Apply for a Visitor Record Extension

  1. Apply at least 30 days before your current visitor status expires.
  2. If you want to remain in Canada longer as a tourist, to visit family, or for personal reasons.
  3. If your TRV or eTA will soon expire but you are already inside Canada.

If your visitor status has already expired, you may apply for Restoration of Status within 90 days, but you cannot continue visiting until approval.

Who Can Apply?

You may apply for a Visitor Record if you are:

  1. In Canada on a valid visitor visa (TRV).
  2. In Canada with an eTA.
  3. Already holding a Visitor Record and need another extension.

Documents Required for Visitor Record Extension

  1. Completed IMM 5708 application form.
  2. Copy of passport (valid through your requested stay).
  3. Copy of your current visitor visa, entry stamp, or visitor record.
  4. Proof of financial support (bank statements, sponsor letter).
  5. Reason for extending stay (travel plans, family needs, medical reasons).

Processing Time.

  1. Processing time: Usually 2–4 months, but you must apply before expiry to keep legal status.

What Happens If You Don't Apply in Time?

  1. If you apply before expiry, you benefit from maintained status (you can stay in Canada until IRCC makes a decision).
  2. If you apply after expiry, you must apply for Restoration of Status within 90 days, but you cannot remain as a legal visitor until restored.
  3. If you miss the 90-day period, you may lose your legal status and could be required to leave Canada.
